Molecular Classification of Breast Cancer

Recent research has discovered new facts about breast cancer cells’ growth and behavior more precisely. Based on the discoveries, the study of breast cancer is subdivided on the molecular level(very small or cell level), to understand what factors affect their growth and how to speculate growth patterns. Oncologists look up to the classification of breast cancer as hope for better treatment.

“The study on the molecular classification of breast cancer will guide oncologists to plan a suitable treatment for individual breast cancer type and help curb cancer spread”- Dr. Amit Gandhi

What is meant by molecular classification of Breast Cancer?

The molecular classification of breast cancer refers to classifying breast cancers based on clinicopathological evidence that points out certain features of cancerous cell growth, division rate, and impact severity.

There are five primary subtypes of breast cancer that exhibit behaviors expressed by their genes.

Molecular Subtypes Of Breast Cancer

Luminal -A Breast Cancer

Luminal A Breast Cancer is recognized by  Hormone receptor-positive and HERS negative. When there are hormonal fluctuations and estrogen, and progesterone receptors are positive, the diagnosis results in HR+. Whereas HER 2 is a protein that helps control the growth of cancerous cells. When HERS 2 is negative, it secretes insufficient protein to curb breast cancer growth. This is a very common type of  breast cancer and progresses very slowly.

 Luminal -B Breast Cancer

Luminal B- is characterized by estrogen receptor-positive, HER-2 negative, and progesterone negative. It has very high levels of K1-67 protein, which indicates the fast growth of cancer.

Luminal-B like Breast Cancer

Luminal B like breast cancer has estrogen receptor-positive, HER2 positive, K1-67 may or may not be high, and progesterone may or may not be negative or positive. This cancer type can have a slightly worse prognosis. adobe indesign crack free download

HERS2- Enriched Breast Cancer

This breast cancer type is estrogen receptor-positive, progesterone receptor-negative, and HERS 2 positive. The prognosis may give worse indications.

Triple-Negative or Basal Like Breast Cancer

Triple-negative or basal-like breast cancer is estrogen negative, progesterone negative, HERS 2 negative. Triple-negative is more invasive and usually starts in breast ducts. It is more common in younger or black women or women with a BRCA1 mutation. It is considered to be the most aggressive.

Subtypes of Breast Cancer Estrogen Progesterone HERS 2 Ki-67
Luminal -A Breast Cancer + + Low -level
Luminal -B Breast Cancer + High-level
Luminal-B like Breast Cancer + +/- + Any level
HERS2 Enriched Breast Cancer + NA
Triple-Negative or Basal Like Breast Cancer NA

Typical treatment plans based on molecular subtypes

Breast cancer treatment depends on various factors such as tumor size, rate of growth, previous cancer treatments, and spread rate. Diagnosis of molecular subtypes helps oncologists provide target treatments by reversing escalation or suppressing a specific hormone or protein, causing breast cancer.

The best suitable treatment for each classification or cancer subtype are:

  • Luminal A– The cancer is HR+; therefore the cancer treatment aims to suppress hormones fuelling cancer growth with immune therapy and block the cancer growth after tumor removal.
  • Luminal B And B like Breast Cancer- The tumors of this type are often treated with chemotherapy or other therapy targeting to control HER2 protein.
  • Triple-Negative– If cancer has not spread, the oncologist may treat it with radiation therapy or chemotherapy. If cancer has advanced, then PARP inhibitor or platinum chemotherapy can be done to curb or slow its growth.

Immunotherapy is not recommended because the cancer cells are not reactive to estrogen, progesterone, or        HER2.

  • HERS2 Positive/ HERS2 Enriched Breast Cancer– The probable target treatment for

HERS 2 positive is with monoclonal antibodies or synthetic proteins that are designed to target and curb cell growth. The drugs can be administered via intravenous injections or pills.
